Milton is a town in Northeastern Ontario, Canada. It is located on the Halton Region’s Niagara Escarpment in the town of Halton Hills, on the west end of Lake Ontario. Milton is part of the Greater Toronto Area and Golden Horseshoe.
Milton’s history began when United Empire Loyalists settled the area along Sixteen Mile Creek in 1793. The town was named after John Milton, the poet. In 1857, Milton was incorporated as a town. On January 1, 1974, Milton became a regional municipality with an elected regional chairman and 12 local councillors. With 61,772 people living in Milton according to the 2016 census (within an urban area of 43 km2 or 11,000 acres), it is the fastest-growing municipality in the Greater Golden Horseshoe.
Milton’s planning policies are focused on controlling urban sprawl and preserving green space. A number of new residential communities are under development, including Clarke, Willmott and Hawthorne Village, along with expansions to older communities such as Scott and Harrison. Milton is also home to a large number of parks and recreation areas, including the Halton County Radial Railway Museum, Conservation Halton Parks, Kelso Conservation Area and Mountsberg Conservation Area.
In 2016, Milton was ranked as the 10th best place to live in Canada by MoneySense magazine.
